AUCTION OF LARGE BIO–MED DEVICE FACILITY
This is the notice I received last summer of an auction of a facility in Newark, California. It came with this impressive video:
I didn’t think about it again until I read the great book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup” by John Carreyrou and then saw the photos below. They were taken in the same plant in the above video. The company, Theranos, was a massive years long corporate fraud. The woman in the photos was the founder and CEO. She deceived many people, including the Vice President of the United States.
Their machine shop may have been the only legitimate thing about this company. Skilled machinists were making parts. Judging by the age of the machines, Theranos raised over $1.2 Billion in venture capital since this shop was opened. We assume that every potential investor was given a tour of this facility even though they probably didn’t even know what they were looking at. Modern CNC machines in action are an impressive sight and may have legitimized Theranos in their eyes.
An episode of Modern Marvels said this: “Machine tools built our modern world, our lifestyle wouldn’t exist without them.”
Including the occasional fraud it seems.
